PIT Airport Information

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), formerly Greater Pittsburgh Airport, Greater Pittsburgh International Airport and commonly referred to as PIT, is an international airport located in the Pittsburgh suburb of Findlay Township, approximately 20 miles (30 km) west of downtown Pittsburgh at Exit 6 of PA-60 (Future I-376) and the Northern Terminus of PA Turnpike 576 (Future I-576). It is owned and operated by the Allegheny County Airport Authority which also operates the Allegheny County Airport. PIT is primarily a passenger airport serving the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, providing 186 non-stop flights per day to 49 destinations via 28 airlines, but it also serves a role in air defense as well as general aviation and cargo flights.

Pittsburgh International is the second busiest passenger airport in Pennsylvania and 42nd busiest in the United States, serving 9,987,310 passengers in 2006 on 235,264 aircraft operations. Until 2004, US Airways operated its largest hub at Pittsburgh International. As of 2007, the airline remains PIT's largest carrier (handling 39 percent of passengers), and the complex serves as a focus city for the airline. Southwest Airlines began service at the airport in May 2005 and is now the second largest airline in Pittsburgh with nonstop service to 7 destinations and more than 20 daily flights. Pittsburgh is also a hub for US Airways Express carriers Republic Airlines and Trans States Airlines. The airport offers service to the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Pittsburgh International Airport occupies more than 12,900 acres (45 km²), making it the fourth largest airport in the nation. It is so large that both Chicago's O'Hare and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson could comfortably fit within the airport's land area.

PIT has been frequently recognized for its quality in meeting travelers' needs. The OAG Worldwide listed the facility to its short list of the world's best airports for four consecutive years. The market research leader, JD Power and Associates named PIT among the top five airports in its two most recent customer satisfaction surveys. Conde Nast Traveler's Magazine named PIT among the best in the United States and in the world in its People's Choice Award.

Parking at Pittsburgh International consists of garage parking at the terminal, plus three lots. In total, there are over 11,000 parking spaces available. All passengers must pass through the main Landside Terminal for flight check in and for baggage claim, so parking closest to the Landside Terminal is the most convenient and expensive.

Closest to the terminal is the parking garage, offering 2,100 spaces. Access is from the Airport Entry drive, just past the Landside Terminal. The garage is connected to the Landside Terminal by a climate-controlled, indoor Moving Walkway/People Mover. This parking is intended for those who will be parked less than 24 hours, although it is possible to park overnight. Rates are $1 for first hour and $3 for each additional hour up to the $19 maximum daily rate.

Long Term Parking - Further away from the Landside Terminal, but connected to it by the indoor Moving Walkway is the long term parking lot which offers 3,100 parking spaces. Rates are a flat $1.50 per hour up to the $9.75 maximum daily rate.

Discount Airport ParkingThis is the biggest lot with 8,000 parking spaces, and it is the most economical of the parking options at Pittsburgh International. However, it is a greater distance from the Terminal, so it takes more time to get to the check-in. A free shuttle bus service moves passenger between the lot and the Landside Terminal. Rates are a flat $6.75 per day. There is no hourly rate.

Valet Parking - Recently, Pittsburgh International Airport inaugurated valet parking for its passengers. This is the most convenient parking option and the most expensive. It is located by the rental car return; to reach it, enter the airport from the Beaver Valley Expressway State Route 60 and follow the signs for Valet Parking. From the Valet Parking kiosk, it is a short walk to the airline check-ins.

Valet parking service is available 24 hours a day seven days per week. The cost is $24.99 for the first day and $19.99 for each additional day. For an additional $99.95, the valet service will detail your car inside or outside, or both for $169.95. Oil changes, wiper blade service, hand washing, vacuuming, and windshield rain repellant application are also available at extra cost.
